Defending your vote against cyber attacks
Defending your vote against cyber attacks
As generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled capabilities become more widely adopted, it is important for election officials to understand how these capabilities could impact the security and integrity of election infrastructure. AI capabilities present opportunities for increased productivity, potentially enhancing both election security and election administration. However, these capabilities also carry the increased potential for greater harm, as malicious actors, including foreign nation state actors and cyber criminals, could leverage these same capabilities for nefarious purposes.
Any organization using technology has cyber risk, but campaigns, literally at the center of our election process, face special challenges. They are up against some of the most sophisticated malicious cyber operators in the world, yet many of them have to operate on a shoestring, not connected to traditional cybersecurity systems like law enforcement and threat sharing environments. Campaigns emerge and grow quickly, supporting hundreds, sometimes thousands of staff and volunteers, storing sensitive information that can be devastating if stolen and released, collecting and using large volumes of data that can be used to manipulate the election. All these factors combined creates an enormous attack surface for cyber operators.
We work with all federal political party committees, U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and Presidential candidates from all parties, as long as they file their candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and meet very modest fundraising thresholds.
We base our product offerings on the needs expressed by parties, political committees and individual campaigns as well as our knowledge of the cybersecurity landscape.
CISA is committed to working collaboratively with those on the front lines of elections—state and local governments, election officials, federal partners, and private sector partners—to manage risks to the Nation’s election infrastructure. The Agency provides resources on election security for both the public and election officials at all levels and will remain transparent and agile in its vigorous efforts to protect America’s election infrastructure against new and evolving threats.
46 Labs team includes former senior personnel at the CISA and DHS, and the tech industry. Their combined expertise gives us the ability to curate a collection of smart products and engage effectively with campaigns and parties on all sides .
We work with credible vendors to make their services available directly to campaigns at low-to-no cost, in addition to providing education and information sharing for campaign professionals. Certain CISA officers were granted special permission by the Federal Election Commission to operate under this model, providing all campaigns--regardless of party--with the support they need within the limits of campaign finance law.
